In the Clear: Ismael's Story

When Ismael was 18 months old, his aunt noticed unusual changes in his eye. Dr. Damikolas identified a gray-white mass and immediately referred him to CHOC, confirming a retinoblastoma diagnosis.

When Ismael was 18 months old, his aunt noticed unusual changes in his eye appearance. His mother Ariadna photographed the phenomenon and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Tiffany Damikolas at AltaMed.

Dr. Damikolas identified a gray-white mass in Ismael's eye and immediately referred him to Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). That evening, Ismael was admitted for MRI and CT scans, confirming a retinoblastoma diagnosis.

The picture Ariadna showed me is a picture you never want to see. As a pediatrician, you always want your kids to be healthy.

When I heard the word 'cancer,' everything went down from there.

Comprehensive Support

The family was referred to Dr. Jonathan Kim at Children's Hospital Los Angeles for treatment planning. Ariadna appreciated Dr. Damikolas's support throughout.

During treatment, Dr. Damikolas connected the family with mental health services, case management, transportation vouchers, and sibling support programs. Ismael underwent six months of chemotherapy, but imaging revealed spreading cancer cells.

Filling out forms is the least I can do. When mom needs assistance, I ensure I handle all those pieces so she can just be a mom with her son.

A Difficult Decision

Dr. Kim recommended eye removal to prevent brain involvement. After this surgery, Ismael now requires only annual oncology checkups. He is currently a healthy kindergartner who is thriving socially.

He's in the clear now. We made it. And we made it with his vision intact.
