AltaMed Helps Students Build Skills for Health Careers

Forty-five college and high school students participated in AltaMed's first Bio Skills Day, exploring various health care career paths through the Escalera and Avanzando programs.

The morning featured a panel discussion with Marco Angulo, M.D. (Medical Director); Norma Perez, M.D. (staff pediatrician); and Edmond Davis (Senior Director for Health Equity, Zimmer Biomet).

Partnership with Zimmer Biomet

AltaMed partnered with Zimmer Biomet to introduce students to orthopedics. The company's health equity team brought cutting-edge equipment allowing students to practice mixed reality medicine. Medical staff conducted hands-on workshops on actual medical techniques.

Escalera Program

The Escalera Program offers individual counseling, career planning resources, networking opportunities, financial aid assistance, STEM awareness initiatives, college application guidance, and internship exploration.

The collaborative program involves AltaMed, Unidos, and Zimmer Biomet, serving students from four high schools: South Gate, South East, Theodore Roosevelt, and James A. Garfield.
