School-Based Initiative Empowers Youth Mental Health Through AltaMed and Hyundai Partnership

AltaMed and Hyundai have partnered for three years to develop healthier communities through school-based behavioral health interventions, delivering 3,338 counseling sessions since 2022 and empowering students with mental health tools and resources.

A Safe Space for Students

At Ánimo Ellen Ochoa Charter Middle School, a blue poster in the counseling office asks, "What makes you happy to be alive?" Students respond with handwritten heart-shaped notes listing sources of joy—music, art, video games, family, friends, and pets.

Jasmine Torres-Coss, an AltaMed school-based social worker, created this tool. She emphasizes understanding each student's needs to help them feel secure and valued.

I create a safe and comfortable environment for my students to open up by taking the time to build rapport with them.

The Program

The poster represents growing openness toward mental health discussions within schools. Ánimo Ellen Ochoa implements behavioral health interventions through partnership with AltaMed's School-Based Behavioral Health Program, supported by Hyundai funding.

On-campus therapists equip students with anxiety and depression management tools through sessions incorporating art therapy and guided breathing exercises. Staff also conduct parent workshops and campus mental health awareness events.

The Crisis

CDC data reveals nearly one in five young people experience mental health struggles, yet many lack access to adequate support or face insurance-related barriers.

Program Impact

The initiative removes barriers to qualified therapists and facilitates long-term care connections. In 2024: 31% of counseled students were uninsured, Hyundai funding enabled two parent workshops, 516 therapy visits serving 102 students, and 42 student referrals to local AltaMed clinics.

Since launching in 2022, the program has delivered 3,338 counseling sessions.
