A Nursing Dream Realized: Flor's Journey from Baker to Nurse Through AltaMed's Collaborative

AltaMed launched the Nursing Pathways Collaborative to grow its own nursing professionals. Flor Medina-Trejo, a proud graduate of the program, shares her inspiring journey from working as a baker to becoming a licensed nurse.

AltaMed launched the Nursing Pathways Collaborative to "grow our own" nursing professionals and educate the next generation of nurses who will be a beacon of hope for underserved communities.

First Cohort Graduates

The AltaMed Foundation celebrated the first cohort of graduates from the AltaMed Nursing Collaborative earlier this month, with 22 new nurses completing the program. Flor Medina-Trejo, an AltaMed nurse and program graduate, shared her personal journey during the graduation ceremony.

Flor's Journey

Growing up with aspirations to care for others, Flor's path took her into the service industry as a baker. In her mid-thirties, she questioned whether this was her life's calling and made the courageous decision to pursue a licensed vocational nursing degree.

Getting into nursing was always in the back of my mind. I liked the nurturing part of it, and I'm not going to lie, I also liked the stability it would provide.

Perseverance Through Challenges

After graduating as an LVN at AltaMed's El Monte clinic, Flor learned about the new Nursing Pathways program and enrolled in the first cohort. Despite facing challenges during her studies, she persevered with support from her daughter, supervisor, and team.

The Nursing Collaborative provides affordable, world-class nursing education with clinical training in AltaMed's community health settings.
